Kenji Mizoguchi (1898-1956) was one of the three masters of Japanese cinema, besides Yasujiro Ozu and Akira Kurosawa. He was fascinated by the world of women, which was a fundamental theme in his work, which comprises over 70 films. Contrary to the New Wave of the 1960s, Mizoguchi fought for equality of the sexes in Japanese society. One of his masterpieces was “Ugetsu monogatari” (1953) (Tales of the Moon and Rain), which was named one of the ten best films of all time. In this historical drama set in the 16th century, he portrays women as smarter than men, with a greater ability to cope with life. They prefer a simple life full of love, while the men have to pay a heavy price for their ambition and greed.

He completed a traineeship as a graphic designer in Lucerne and trained for 5 years with Création Hollenstein and Edition Condé Nast in Paris. Between 1965 and 1973, he worked with various art studios in Los Angeles (Ray and Charles Eames, Carson/Roberts ad agency).
