About this poster

The Swiss graphic designer Niklaus Troxler is a poster designer and was the initiator and organiser of the Willisau Jazz Festival from 1975 to 2010. The poster with the white dove on the microphone for the Coltrane Memorial at the Willisau Jazz Festival 1977 is characterised by Troxler's early innovative poster style. John William "Trane" Coltrane, born in 1926, was one of the most important US jazz musicians. Initially he played alto saxophone, from the early 1950s almost exclusively tenor saxophone and from 1960 also soprano saxophone. Musically, Coltrane broke the shackles of conventional jazz and incorporated African and Oriental influences into his playing, for example. His innovations and inspired playing had a lasting influence on the jazz world. Coltrane died of cancer in 1967.
