The Jazz Festival Willisau is considered to be one of the most important international contemporary jazz events. The lineup includes world-famous artists as well as newcomers. In 1966, the graphic designer and musician Niklaus Troxler began to organise jazz concerts in the village of Willisau, and from 1975 to 2010, he was the organiser of the Willisau Jazz Festival, which takes place every year at the end of August. (He handed over to his nephew in 2010.). More than 900 concerts have taken place and more than 2500 musicians have played there since 1966, some more than once. For many years, the festival has been broadcast live on Swiss radio. The pianist Keith Jarrett once called Willisau “one of the best places for music in the world”. Niklaus Troxler has also created all the posters for the jazz festivals and concerts in Willisau (about 200 posters since 1970). His posters have received national and international awards and some are exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
