About this poster

This is the last poster in the series of photomontages by Herbert Matter. Unlike the other designs, this one doesn’t feature a close-up in the foreground but distributes the various elements across the image space in a suggestive way: the contrast between the tiny couple at the lower edge of the image and the vast sky with majestic clouds in the background conveys the grandeur of the mountain world, while the cable car travelling through the top half of the image refers to the technical accomplishments that opened up the wild nature of Engelberg to modern tourism.

Born 1907 in Engelberg, died 1984 in New York. Herbert Matter was trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva from 1923 to 1925 and at the Académie Moderne in Paris (by Léger) between 1928 and 1929.
