Engelberg - Obwalden, CH

The founding of a Benedictine monastery in the year 1120 lies at the origin of the town of Engelberg in the mountains of central Switzerland, near Lucerne. According to legend, the monastery was founded after angels’ voices were heard coming from the top of a nearby mountain – thus its name, which translates as “Angel mountain”. Engelberg’s first tourists were possibly the mountaineers who first climbed Mount Titlis in 1744, but the town steadily gained popularity as a health resort from the 1850s on. In 1898 Engelberg was connected to the town of Stansstad by electric railway. In 1931 the road leading to Engelberg was made passable for automobiles in winter. Finally, the construction of cable cars and hotels helped to pave the way for Engelberg to become the popular winter and summer holiday resort that it is today.
