About this poster
This political campaign poster from 1955 is about "Emserwasser" - ethyl alcohol that was produced in Domat/Ems by Holzverzuckerungs AG (Hovag) from waste wood and used as a fuel additive during the Second World War. Production was supported by the Swiss Federal Treasury to counter the fuel shortage. The contract with Hovag was valid until 1955. Since the petrol substitute was no longer in demand after the war, the people voted against further subsidies for Hovag in 1956. In the years that followed, Hovag became today's Ems-Chemie.
