Melchior Annen was born in Schwyz in 1868, completed an apprenticeship as a lithographer in Einsiedeln and was trained as a draftsman in Donauwörth and Nuremberg. He later worked as a draftsman and painter at the Orell Füssli Graphic Institute in Zurich and, after a stay in Paris, ran his own studio for poster art and illustrations in Zurich.
