About this poster

This original stone lithograph advertising the Jungfrau railway was designed in the 1930s by the painter Ernst Hodel, who today is mainly known for his large landscape murals. It shows a sublime view of the Jungfrau peak as seen from the Jungfraujoch. Beneath it lies the “Sphinx” outcrop with the scientific observatory, which was opened in 1931. A cupola for astronomical observations was added to the building in 1950. This later poster from 1952 shows the addition of the cupola as well as visitors on the viewing platform.
