About this poster
The Tavaro company in Geneva was founded in 1934. In 1940, they introduced the portable electric Elna sewing machine. With its dark green varnish, Elna broke with the tradition of black-coloured sewing machines, and it was an international success. The product’s success is alluded to literally and figuratively in this unique poster design by Herbert Leupin. The phrase “ein grosser Wurf” (literally “a great toss” as in tossing dice) is used in German to mean “a great success”. The literal meaning of the expression is used in the depiction of a huge, hyperrealistic die with an image of the Elna sewing machine in the place of the number 6.

Herbert LEUPIN was born in Beinwil am See in 1916. He lived in Basel and later in his life he moved to the Italian part of Switzerland, where he died in 1999.
