Stoos, Kt. Schwyz, CH

The mountain village of Stoos in the canton of Schwyz is car-free and offers a wide variety of winter and summer activities. It is accessible via the Stoosbahn funicular, which is the steepest funicular railway in the world and was opened in 2017 to replace an older line built in 1933. Stoos also has a chair lift leading up to the peak of the Fronalpstock, offering beautiful views of Lake Lucerne. The region was already well known in the Victorian age – Queen Victoria herself spent holidays in the health resort at Stoos. However, tourism went into decline after the First World War. Today, Stoos is back on the global tourism map thanks to its record-breaking funicular.
