In this 1946 colour lithograph the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) tried, for the second time, to regulate the competencies of the various means of transport on a national level. In 1935 the Swiss people had voted against restricting competition. Pierre Gauchat was a realist who wanted advertising messages to make an immediate impression on the viewer and be directly understandable. He liked to make his posters very simple, neat and objective. This 1946 poster is an interesting piece that exemplifies Gauchat’s high-level work.

Pierre GAUCHAT was born in Zurich in 1902 and died in Cairo in 1956.
He studied graphic design under Ernst Keller at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts and later in Munich. After learning about printing techniques during an internship at Orell Füssli, he started his own studio in Zurich in 1922 and taught graphic design from 1926 to 1945.
