About this poster
The graphic designer Pierre Gauchat was a realist who strived for immediate effect and direct understanding in advertising messages. His wonderfully objective designs corresponded to his need for simplicity and clarity. This vintage poster for the new five-volume telephone directory of 1947 is a good example.

Pierre GAUCHAT was born in Zurich in 1902 and died in Cairo in 1956.
He studied graphic design under Ernst Keller at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts and later in Munich. After learning about printing techniques during an internship at Orell Füssli, he started his own studio in Zurich in 1922 and taught graphic design from 1926 to 1945.
