About this poster
As well as designing advertisements for travel destinations and consumer goods, the famous poster master Hugo Laubi also occasionally created posters for political referendums, such as this one from 1936 against an inheritance and gift tax. The scene arouses pity, showing how referendum campaigns appealed to voters’ emotions back then, just as (or perhaps even more than) they do nowadays.

Hugo Laubi was born in 1888 in Zurich, where he worked as an illustrator, painter and graphic artist until he died in 1959. He studied in Munich and Paris and worked as a graphic artist in London in 1911. In 1918 he became the director of the printing and lithography company Gebr.
