About this poster
Emil Cardinaux designed several beautiful posters for the Bally shoe company between 1924 and 1936. A native of Bern, Cardinaux went to Munich at the age of 21 to study law, but the bohemian atmosphere of the town got to him and he turned to art instead. He came under the influence of Franz von Stuck and Ferdinand Hodler and started painting Alpine landscapes, as he loved the Bernese mountains and was a devoted mountaineer. Back in Bern, from about 1905 on, he turned to applied graphics as a means of livelihood and eventually became one of Switzerland's most pioneering and prominent poster artists.
