The Swiss Federal postal service was founded on 1 January 1849, just month after the founding of the Swiss Federal State. PTT was formed in 1920 when the post office, telegraph and telephone services merged. In 1997, PTT separated into two new companies: Swiss Post (which remained responsible for passenger transport, the delivery of letters and parcels and financial services) and the telecommunications company Swisscom.
