Werner Bischof

Werner BISCHOF was one of the most important Swiss photographers. He was born in 1916 in Zurich and died in the Andes in 1954.

From 1932 to 1936, he studied photography at the School of Applied Arts (Kunstgewerbeschule) in Zurich and then worked in advertising. Actually, Bischof wanted to become a painter and was a member of the artists’ union “Allianz”.
In the 1940s and 50s, he travelled the world to report on post-war Europe, the famine in India, the wars in Korea and Indochina, and everyday life in Japan and South America. His unique and fine artistic photographs published in the magazines “Du”, “Life” and “Paris Match” attained world fame for their depth and strong human empathy.
