Rudolf Hirt opened a shoe shop on Rathausgasse in Lenzburg in 1891. His great success enabled him to expand his business and, in 1908, even to build a new factory on Bahnhofstrasse. He took advantage of the opportunities offered by the industrial shoe production that was just beginning at the time and ran a mail-order business. He was evidently so successful that he expanded as far as Zurich and, in the 1920s, was able to open a shoe shop at 43 Sihlstrasse, which is now largely forgotten. The well-known graphic designer Hugo Laubi promoted the opening of the shoe shop with this poster, created in his characteristic colourful, humorous style.

Hugo Laubi was born in 1888 in Zurich, where he worked as an illustrator, painter and graphic artist until he died in 1959. He studied in Munich and Paris and worked as a graphic artist in London in 1911. In 1918 he became the director of the printing and lithography company Gebr.
