Walter Diethelm was born in 1913 in Zurich. From 1928 to 1932 he apprenticed as a graphic designer at a Zurich advertising agency, then in 1932/1933 he took courses at the School of Arts and Crafts in Zurich and abroad (in Paris as a student of Fernand Léger).
