Hans-Rudolf Lutz completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter at Orell-Füssli from 1955-1959 and attended a one-year course in typographic design at the Basel School of Applied Arts in 1963, later becoming head of the ‘expression typographique’ group, which had the task of exploring and propagating the typographic possibilities of the then new phototypesetting. Lutz devoted his life to typography, both as a specialist teacher of typesetting at the School of Design, as a teacher of typography and interdisciplinary design in Lucerne and in his own Zurich studio. Hans-Rudolf Lutz's poster for the exhibition at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich on the subject of ‘Concrete utopias in art and society around 1968’ is unique.

After completing a typesetting apprenticeship in Zurich, Hans-Rudolf Lutz left Switzerland in 1961 to travel through Europe and Northern Africa.
