About this poster

This poster by the famed Swiss graphic designer Josef Müller-Brockmann advertises the 1975 exhibition on Japanese lamps at the Zurich Design museum. The exhibition title, „akari“, means „light“ in Japanese and is also the name of the iconic Akari lamps designed by the Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi in the 1950s. These spherical paper lanterns are also alluded to by the circular design that dominates the poster. Müller-Brockmann uses the simplest of shapes, a circle, brillantly combined with an evocative colour combinations and typography, to convey the essence of the poster subject.
