This is a classic design by the great Art Deco poster artist Paul Colin for the General Transatlantic Company, known as the French Line. The formidable steamship sails over a background consisting of the stripes of the French flag, evoking the glamour of the great age of travel and the pride of this great French transport company.

Paul Colin (1892-1985) was born in Nancy, where he apprenticed at a printing house and then studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. He became famous in 1925, when he created the first poster for Josephine Baker’s “Revue Nègre” at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.
