Armin Hofmann summarises the theme of 3000 years of amphitheatres and theatre architecture with just a few shapes in this extraordinary poster for a 1955 Basel exhibition. The Basel designer and former teacher at the Basel School of Design was one of the founders of the "Swiss graphic style" and was known for his formally unique black and white posters, whose message he skilfully reduced to a minimum.

Between 1937 and 1939, he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich and was trained as a lithographer until 1943.
From 1943 until 1948 Hofmann worked as lithographer in Basel and Berne and in his own graphic design studio.
