About this poster

This lovely poster advertising Linthal (Glarus) was created in 1905 by Edmond Bille and was one of the winning designs in the first poster contest organised by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). The SBB was at the time the most important national tourism company and beyond competition as a transport system. Its advertisements no longer needed to show railways as they had done in the 19th century, but rather an intact and picturesque Switzerland, which was at this time becoming one of the most highly industrialised nations. Pristine landscapes were shown to attract the wealthy, foreign upper classes who wanted an escape from the noisy and polluted cities.
