Iwan E. Hugentobler is one of the most prominent horse painters represented in 20th century Swiss poster art. He created many posters for equestrian events, but his talents also came in useful for this poster illustrating door-to-door transport organised by the Swiss federal railways - a rare depiction of a horse-drawn cart next to a cargo train.

Iwan Edwin HUGENTOBLER was born in Degersheim in 1886 and died in Zurich in 1972. He was a painter and graphic designer.
After studying at the vocational school of St. Gallen, he became a designer for a St. Gallen embroidery company and taught at the school from 1915 to 1920. He was especially interested in images of horses and took classes with the animal painter Adolf Thomann. Hugentobler became known as a ... more
