About this poster

This lovely 1940 vintage poster for the French cosmetics brand Roger & Gallet conveys a sense of elegance and beauty. With this realistically rendered perfume bottle set on a silk scarf, the Basel graphic designer Peter Birkhäuser created a compelling and attractive piece of advertising for the famous, original Eau de Cologne. In 1862, Roger & Gallet had bought the perfume business of Jean Marie Farina, whose great-great-uncle Giovanni Maria Farina had invented Eau de Cologne in the early 18th century.
