About this poster

The “Panteen” curl on Herpert Leupin’s 1945 poster for Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd. in Basel was designed in two versions on a black and on a white background. It captivates the viewer through great suggestive power, expressiveness and simplicity. Meticulously faithful to nature, Leupin painted the dark curl on a white background to make it look three-dimensional. The curl is painted in an almost hyper-realistic painting technique in which reality and illusion seem to overlap.
