About this poster

With the typical realism of the Swiss object poster combined with a touch of cubism, Fritz Bühler created a strong advertising message for a simple pot of face cream. The name “NIVEA” printed on the flat blue tin speaks for itself, and the metallic glint of the protective aluminium foil contrasts with the soft pastel hues of its shadow on the snow-white cream. Looking at this original vintage poster from 1948, we feel as though we have just bought a fresh pot of Nivea and peeled off the foil, and we long to feel the lovely white cream on our hands and faces.

Fritz Bühler was born to a Basel printer’s family in 1909 and died in a tragic accident in Colmar, France in 1963. He studied at art schools in Basel, Berlin and Paris and got his first job at the age of twenty as a graphic designer for Publicitas AG.
