About this poster
This original poster is a fascinating document from the history of tourism and passenger shipping in particular. In 1926, the Italian Sitmar Line bought the steamship built in 1913 as the ‘Sierra Salvada’ and renamed it the ‘Neptunia’. This poster advertised a cruise in the western Mediterranean in the spring of 1927 - one of the few trips that the Sitmar Line operated with this ship, as the passenger ship was sold to the German company Hapag in September of the same year and renamed ‘Oceana’. A medieval castle in Spain, probably the Alcazar of Segovia, thrones high above us on a hill. The Italian artist Giulio Ferrari added oranges to his brightly coloured view to make it clear which country we are in! Very well-preserved rarity from the 1920s.
