This original poster advertised the novel "Le Coupable" by French poet François Coppée, which was published in the Parisian daily newspaper "Le Journal" in 1896. The poster was created by the famous designer Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, who was born in Lausanne but moved to Paris at a young age and soon made a name for himself in the artistic milieu there. Steinlen's famous poster for the cabaret theatre "Le Chat Noir" was created in the same year as this poster.
