About this poster
With this impressive stone lithograph showing a beautiful view of the Aletsch glacier, Wilhelm Burger masterfully conveyed the play of light and shadow on the snow-covered mountains. The group of sled dogs and their human companions fit harmoniously into the colour scheme of the majestic Bernese Oberland mountain landscape. This poster from 1914 is considered to be the first one to advertise the Jungfraubahn and is a rare masterpiece.

Wilhelm Friedrich Burger was born in Zurich in 1882. He apprenticed as a lithographer and then studied at the Zurich school of arts and crafts and at the academy in Karlsruhe. In the first decade of the 20th century he worked as a graphic designer in London, New York, Philadelphia and Boston. In 1913 he settled in Rüschlikon on Lake Zurich.
