The American jazz trumpeter, tombonist Clifford Edward Thornton (1936 - 1989) was famous for free and avant-garde jazz in the 1960s and 1970s. He played at the Jazz Willisau of 1977, for which Niklaus Troxler designed an exciting poster for his jazz concert.

He was trained in typography and graphic design at the art school in Lucerne; from 1967 to 1971 he worked as an art director in Paris; in 1973 he opened his studio for graphic design in Willisau, where he mainly works for cultural and music events, like the Willisau Jazz Festival, which he founded.
