About this poster
One of the most famous of all Cappiello designs, this image promotes LE NIL, the cigarette rolling paper which was introduced by Joseph Bardou & fils in 1887. Cappiello has chosen the elephant, with its tough hide, to symbolise the paper’s tear resistance.

Leonetto Cappiello was born in 1875 in Livorno, Italy and died in 1942 in Cannes, France. In 1898 he moved to Paris and became known through his caricatures of famous artists of the time, such as Yvette Guilbert.
