Hans Spetzmann & Co. existed in Basel between at least 1918 and the 1930s, with branches in St. Gallen and Zurich. This original advertising poster shows a snowman - as a contrast to the black coal and in keeping with the cold season, when households had to be heated with coal and firewood. While coal still accounted for the majority of fuels in 1918, it was increasingly replaced by oil after the Second World War.
