About this poster
This poster comes from the early days of the Gotthard Railway, which had only just been inaugurated ten years previously and established a transalpine train connection between Switzerland and Italy. The advertisement shows romantic images of three destinations made available to late 19th century travellers by the Gotthard line: Lake Lucerne with Tell’s chapel, Lake Maggiore with the church of Madonna del Sasso, and the final destination - the Gulf of Naples with a smoking Mount Vesuvius in the background.
Artist: Hugo F. D’Alési
Hugo d’Alési had Romanian ancestry and was one of the first painters of his century to dedicate himself to poster design – particularly travel posters. He mainly worked for the French railway companies and founded his own lithography studio, which unfortunately led him into financial difficulties. He was also commissioned to paint educational images that were exhibited at the Paris world’s fair in 1900.
