In this rare poster design of Armin Hofmann's ‘Giselle’ from 1959, the bright white of the lettering contrasts with the grey tones of the photograph; the dancer, cut off at the head and foot, becomes a graphic symbol of movement rather than a three-dimensional image. Hofmann's design for an open-air ballet performance was one of the defining images of Swiss graphic design, is part of the MoMA collection and one of the most frequently published posters in renowned poster books.

Armin Hofmann was born 1920 in Winterthur, lives and works in Basel.
Between 1937 and 1939, he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich and was trained as a lithographer until 1943.
From 1943 until 1948 Hofmann worked as lithographer in Basel and Berne and in his own graphic design studio.
