About this poster
Chicory coffee was already popular in the 19th century but experienced a boom during the Second World War, when food products had to be rationed. In Switzerland rationing lasted several years longer than the war, until 1948, and this attractive poster comes from this era. Jules Glaser was born in 1917 in Binningen, Basel-Land, spent his childhood in South America and returned to Basel at the age of 13. From 1933 to 1935, he apprenticed as an ornamental painter at the Basel School of Design.
