About this poster

The Compagnie Générale Transatlantique S.A. was founded in 1861 to operate freight and passenger services to North and Central America, as well as government-subsidised mail transport on these routes. In the late 1930s, the shipping company was hit by an unusual wave of ship losses. In 1938, two of its ships burnt and the Second World War, which broke out in 1939, meant almost the total loss of the fleet as various important ships sank. In 1936, Jean Auvigne designed this striking poster subject with the flags of the various ports.
