Ernst Mettler was born in 1903 in St. Gallen. He studied graphic design at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts and then worked as a freelance graphic designer and photographer using the logo “Werbefoto Mettler” (Mettler commercial photography) before being hired as a press photographer at Zürcher Illustrierte magazine.
