About this poster

This very rare and stunning object poster by the famous Basel poster designer Peter Birkhäuser for the glass jar company Bülach was created in the same year as his famous button poster for PKZ. A masterpiece in a hyper-realistic style. Bülach (now Vetropack) produced jars for the Swiss housewives for conserving fruit to serve their families during the hard winter months. Birkhäuser had a strong passion for precision brilliant colors and rich textures, and he used the difficult airbrush technique in lithograph printing. With this technique, he succeeded in making an object or product look real. Observe the contrasts in the picture: the soft curves of the pear, the streamlined metallic handle and cool smoothness of the green jar. The trompe-l'oeil technique is heightened by the remarkable reflection in the glass. It is very hard to find better advertising than the "object posters" created in Basel in the 1940s and '50s by Niklaus Stoecklin, Peter Birkhäuser and later by Herbert Leupin.
