About this poster

Another leading figure in Swiss Design was Armin Hofmann. At the age of 26, he took up a position as a teacher at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule Basel. He later became head of the graphic design department at the Basel School of Design. His trademark: the use of basic graphic elements such as dots, lines and shapes. He manages to embody both simplicity and complexity in his designs. Hofmann is also famous for his brilliant poster designs in the 1950s and 1960s. He uses colour and lettering particularly sparingly and he is known for his use of black and white images and his ability to convey a message with simplest forms. He immortalised his views and teachings in 1965 in his work ‘Methodik der Form- und Bildgestaltung’, a great classic among textbooks for graphic designers around the world. This original poster for the Stadttheater Basel is a wonderful example of Swiss Style.
