About this poster
Cardinaux designed several posters for Bally between 1924 and 1936. Here he brings us a dedicated little shoe shiner adding luster to an assortment of the Bally line which, as a variant of this image states, has shoes for the whole family. A native of Bern, Cardinaux went to Munich at the age of 21 to study law, but the bohemian atmosphere of the town got to him and he turned to art instead. He came under the influence of Franz van Stuck and Ferdinand Hodler, important symbolist painters, and started painting mountain landscapes in their style. But back in Bern, from about 1905 on, he turned to applied graphics as a means of livelihood and eventually became one of Switzerland's most respected posterists.
