About this poster
The “Künstler-Maskenball” was a fixture in the Zurich carnival season until the 1980s. Well-known artists created the decorations and the guests’ costumes had to be as bizarre and inventive as possible. In his poster for the 1939 ball, Alois Carigiet captured the event’s wacky spirit through gaudy colouring, mismatched typography and a strange mask featuring a hand holding a paintbrush where the nose should be.
