About this poster

This unique poster was designed by Armin Hofmann in 1950 for the exhibition of a group of artists from Basel called "Kreis 48" (circle 48). Armin Hofmann designed brilliant posters in the 1950s, taught at the Basel School of Design from 1946 to 1986 and with his colleagues contributed to the development of the Swiss International Style. Hofmann is well known for his use of black-and-white images and for his skill in conveying a message with the simplest of forms.

Armin Hofmann was born 1920 in Winterthur, lives and works in Basel.
Between 1937 and 1939, he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich and was trained as a lithographer until 1943.
From 1943 until 1948 Hofmann worked as lithographer in Basel and Berne and in his own graphic design studio.
