About this poster

The influential Swiss artist Max Huber created this unique and striking design for the 25th Italian Grand Prix at the Monza racing circuit in 1954. We have a frog’s-eye view of a race car about to cross the finish line beneath a huge chequered flag that seems to be blowing in the wind. Huber created a sense of dynamism by introducing various slanting lines – the angle of the ground, the leaning figure of the race car driver, the flagpole and the poster’s title – and by distorting the flag’s black squares and shifting them slightly in relation to their white background.
