Zermatt, Wallis / Valais, CH

The town of Zermatt with a population of 6000 people became famous as a mountaineering and ski resort from the mid-19th century. It owes much of its fame to the Matterhorn, the distinctly pyramid-shaped, 4,478 metre-high summit with its tip bent slightly to the left. Although it is not the highest mountain in Switzerland, it is an iconic emblem of the Swiss Alps and probably one of the most photographed mountains in the world. From being an agricultural community until the age of tourism began, Zermatt has become a very popular tourist town and jet-set destination and has attracted many celebrities such as Sir Bob Geldof (Live 8), John Lord (Deep Purple), Mick Hucknall (Simply Red) and top model Laetitia Casta. Robbie Williams is said to have celebrated New Year’s Eve in Zermatt and Phil Collins celebrated his 50th birthday there.
