Wengen lies sheltered from the wind on a sunny plateau at the foot of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, 400 metres above the Lauterbrunnen valley in the canton of Berne. It is a summer and winter holiday resort with a long tradition. Since 1893, Wengen has been reachable from the town of Lauterbrunnen via the historic Wengernalp Railway. Whether it was Wengen or its neighbour Mürren or even the early British visitors – it does not matter. The Jungfrau region is the cradle of skiing, mountain climbing, train rides and hiking. It was certainly in Wengen that the British first persuaded the locals to run the mountain railway in winter, thereby providing the first easy way up the mountain to ski down. Wengen is today a delightful car-free village that has resisted change. It offers hotels, chalets, shops, bars, enjoyable evening promenades as well as good spectator sport. Skiing in this region is extensive with beginner slopes in the village and the famous Lauberhorn race track for the best skiers in the world.
