Suze

Suze is a French bitter liqueur made from gentian root and owned today by Pernod-Ricard. The true origins of the recipe are a mystery, and France and Switzerland are in competition for Suze’s origin story. The company website describes the liqueur as having been invented by the Frenchman Fernand Moureaux, who presented his gentian root aperitif at the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris and won a gold medal for it. Meanwhile, the inhabitants of the village of Sonvilier in the Swiss Jura maintain that the liqueur was invented by Hans Kappeler, a herbalist from Sonvilier, who later sold the recipe to a Frenchman. In fact, there is a river named Suze which runs through the village, and gentian grows profusely in the region. In any case, the liqueur became hugely popular and remains so today. A bottle of Suze can even be found on a cubist collage that Pablo Picasso made in 1912.
