In 1898 the Helvetia Soap factory was founded in Olten as the first continental European subsidiary of the British Lever Brothers Ltd. In 1909 it was renamed Sunlight AG, or ‘Savonnerie Sunlight’. In 1929 the Margarine Union and Lever Brothers Ltd. merged to form Unilever. Unilever Switzerland, founded the same year, became the service company for Sunlight and two other Swiss firms. In 1987, Sunlight AG became Lever AG, which in 1999 merged with Elida Fabergé to form Lever Fabergé AG. The Sunlight soap factory in Olten was closed down in 1994.
