Nylon, first produced in 1935 by Wallace Hume Carothers, was the first commercially successful synthetic polymer. It was first used in nylon-bristled toothbrushes in 1938 and in women’s stockings in 1940. Nylon was used during World War II to replace silk, for example in parachutes.
