Museo Cantonale d’Arte, Lugano, CH

The Museo Cantonale d’Arte was opened in 1987 in the centre of Lugano in southern Switzerland. The activity of the Museo Cantonale d'Arte pursues two parallel objectives: the preservation and study of the museum's permanent collection, consisting mainly of works from the 19th and 20th centuries, and the planning/presentation of temporary exhibitions. The works, most of which belong to the permanent collection, come from the artistic heritage of the Canton of Ticino. In addition, there are donations and deposits from other Swiss museums (Geneva, Basel, Zurich and Winterthur), the Swiss Confederation, the ProMuseo association and private donors. The constant growth of the collection is one of the main objectives of the museum. It is documented from the 19th century to the present day in relation to the region of Ticino, an area situated between northern and southern Europe. In terms of its exhibition activity, the Museo Cantonale d'Arte has presented some ninety exhibitions over the course of almost twenty years, covering a wide range of subjects: from painting to sculpture, photography, video, architecture and graphics.
